- Get the deer on the ground in natural surroundings — grass, leaves, or forest floor, not a tailgate
- Position the rack so both sides are fully visible
- Kneel or sit behind the animal rather than holding it up, holding compresses apparent size
- Keep blood minimal; a few seconds with a rag makes a significant difference
- Use natural light, ideally open shade, overcast is ideal, harsh direct sun creates unflattering shadows
- Shoot at the animal’s level, not from above
