Everything else we chase – the big bucks, the memorable hunts, the traditions we build – they’re good things. But they’re nothing compared to the glory of what happened that first Christmas. The God who made the deer you track and the waters you fish decided that humanity mattered enough to Him that He would become one of us.
There was a time when hunting and fishing knowledge passed naturally from one generation to the next… That’s not how it works anymore.
Most hunters and anglers have years of trophies documented nowhere — or scattered across camera rolls, group texts,
Deer behavior in December is shaped by three factors: recovery from the rut, changing food sources, and a second breeding cycle that most hunters either don’t know about or don’t take seriously. Understanding these patterns turns December from a dead month into legitimate opportunity.

That first Thanksgiving celebrated a successful harvest and survival against long odds. The food came directly from the land and water around Plymouth. Duck, geese, possibly swans or passenger pigeons. Venison brought by the Native Americans. Seafood including eel, lobster, and mussels. These weren’t exotic choices. Recognizing where your local deer herd sits in the rut cycle changes everything about how you hunt. The signs are there if you pay attention to them.
That’s the funny thing about hunting stories. The best ones usually aren’t about the biggest antlers.
The gap between trail cam photos and actually punching a tag comes down to understanding what those images are really telling you… and what they’re not. Most hunters get so caught up in collecting photos that they forget the ultimate goal is putting a mature buck within range.
It turns out, the simple act of keeping a hunting and fishing journal can change everything. It changes a bunch of outdoor experiences into a database of knowledge that gets more valuable every season. Many people avoid this, however, because they think they need to write like Hemingway to make it worthwhile. They don’t.
